CAM Sync Sensor

RC51 OEM Cam Sync Sensor

This page provides detailed information about the OEM Cam Sync (CAM) sensor (also called the 'Cam Pulse Generator') used in the Honda RC51, including its specifications, connector details, visual references, and technical documentation.

Cam Sync Sensor Description

The Honda RC51 (RVT1000R) utilizes a 2-pin Variable Reluctance (VR) sensor as its OEM cam sync sensor. Notably, both this sensor and the crank trigger sensor are unshielded in the factory configuration. Honda engineers likely optimized the wiring routing to minimize electromagnetic interference without shielding. However, adding shielding can enhance signal integrity and reduce noise.

Connector Data

The OEM connector is a Sumitomo HX090-2S-1. The OEM part number from Sumitomo is: 6189-0552.

Proper pin assignment is critical for the VR sensor, as incorrect connections can lead to erratic ECU readings. Refer to the Sensors Sub-Harness page for a detailed wiring diagram.

Observe the image below; the GRAY wire from the OEM leads on the cam sync sensor is the signal wire and should connect to Pin 17 on Connector A of the FT550. The GRAY/GREEN wire is the negative for the VR sensor and should be connected to battery negative. Both wires should remain shielded. The signal wire should be shielded until reaching the ECU, and the sensor negative should be shielded until reaching the battery negative, where both the sensor negative and shield should be grounded at the battery negative terminal.

Additional Notes: When installing or modifying the cam sync sensor wiring, ensure the shielding is properly grounded to prevent noise interference. Use high-quality, fuel- and heat-resistant materials for all connections, and verify continuity with a multimeter after installation to confirm signal integrity. Shielding should only be grounded at the ECU side for the signal wire. Never ground both ends of a shield wire.

ECU Setup

ECU configuration details for the cam sync sensor will be provided in a future update. Ensure the ECU is programmed to recognize the VR sensor’s signal characteristics, including polarity and trigger pattern.

Cam Sync Sensor Images

Please refer to these images to determine which connector position is signal and which is negative. Some of these images show the OEM harness and the OEM connector for the CAM sensor.
